Application info

AccuRadio is an independent, multichannel Internet radio property. AccuRadio reaches nearly a million listeners per month.[1] Based on press releases at andomedia.com, Accuradio is usually about the tenth most listened to web streaming service, although that varies from month to month, among all US broadcast groups that stream online and that information is from average quarter hour (AQH) and cumulative audience (cume) totals for Accuradio as gathered by Ando Media.

With over 300 channels of rock, pop, jazz, classical, oldies, country, urban, Latin, vocals and world.

These category denominations are the main headings on the AccuRadio website, and most of these are the head of a submenu listing several links to subordinate webpages. Most of these webpages contain a list of selectable radio channels. Not all the channels available are listed on the individual genre pages, some are found under a link on the home page for AccuRadio labeled 'Complete Channel Listing'. The AccuTunes interface won People's Voice award for Best Radio in the 2008 Webby Awards.[2]

Listeners to the AccuRadio transmissions can observe that these have an unusually precise transmission of metadata: (The song) Title, Artist, Album, Composer, Label and Year are routinely transmitted. This means these channels are well suited for automated radio music ripping, a process resulting in a list of MP3 files well suited for explorative browsing of music.

AccuRadio doesn't regard this as a threat against conventional music CD sales, which they participate in by linking to Amazon.com: "We stream at only 32 kbps, which makes for a good-sounding Internet radio station but is not a quality level that most consumers feel is a substitute for CD ownership."[1]

Accuradio has also launched two subsites that are not listed in the main site's complete channel listing or anywhere else on the main site. They are chitownsmoothjazz.com and phillysmoothjazz.com. The latter mainly mirrors the Accuradio smooth jazz channels, while the former, while also mirroring the individual style channels, leans more towards Chicago smooth jazz artists than the main Accuradio site does. Both sites were started after over the air stations that aired the format dropped smooth jazz for other formats.

AccuRadio is based in Chicago. Their founder/CEO is Kurt Hanson who publishes RAIN: Radio and Internet Newsletter.
